Thinking about getting MSPA certified? This guide covers everything — from the difference between Basic and Plus membership to how much it really costs. You’ll know exactly what to expect before spending a dime.
Yes — if you plan to shop long-term or want access to specialty assignments like banking, auto, or video. It’s not required for basic retail and restaurant shops. But serious shoppers consistently find that the Plus membership pays for itself through course discounts alone. New shoppers should complete 15–25 shops first to make sure mystery shopping fits their lifestyle before investing in certification.

What Is MSPA Certification?
MSPA Americas is the main trade group for mystery shopping. They offer courses that teach best practices. Companies look for these credentials when picking shoppers for specialty jobs.
Think of MSPA certification like a professional badge. It tells companies you’ve learned the trade and passed tests. Your credentials show up on your MSPA profile where companies can search and find you.
The program has three layers. Core courses teach skills every shopper needs. Specialty courses focus on specific fields like banking, auto sales, or fine dining. Advanced courses like Gold show deeper commitment to the craft.
You must join MSPA first. You can’t buy courses without being a Basic (free) or Plus (paid) member. Most serious shoppers join as Plus — the course discounts make it worth every dollar.
Picking Your Membership Level
Before you pursue MSPA certification, know your two options. The right choice depends on how many courses you plan to take.
Basic Membership (Free)
Basic costs nothing but has real limits. You get access to the MSPA job board where companies post open shops. You also join the MSPA database where companies can find you. Basic members buy courses at full price — $55 each for most courses.
There’s one important catch. You only get one free membership period. If you cancel, you must rejoin as a Plus member. You’ll also miss the significant discounts that make certification affordable.
Plus Membership ($49–$60/year)
Plus unlocks the full MSPA experience. It costs $49 paid upfront or $60 spread monthly ($5/month for 12 months). For most shoppers who plan to take more than one course, Plus pays for itself quickly.
The biggest perk is the free Intro course your first year — a $55 value on its own. All other courses drop from $55 to just $15 each. Gold and Video I drop to $55 from much higher prices.
Plus members also get full database visibility, member discounts on travel and entertainment, Plus-only webinars, and reduced pricing at ShopperFest events.
| Feature | Basic (Free) | Plus ($49/year) |
|---|---|---|
| Job Board Access | Yes | Yes |
| Database Listing | Limited | Full with credentials |
| Intro Course | $55 | Free (first year) |
| Other Courses | $55 each | $15 each |
| Gold Course | $120 | $55 |
| Video I Course | $100 | $55 |
| Member Deals | No | Yes |
| ShopperFest Discount | No | Yes |
The Three Core Courses
MSPA requires you to complete three core courses first. These cover the fundamental skills every shopper needs. You must finish all three before unlocking most specialty courses.
Intro to Mystery Shopping
This course gives a full overview of the field. You learn what mystery shopping really is, what companies expect, and how to do jobs the right way. It was called “Silver” in older forum posts, but MSPA updated the name.
Plus members get this course free their first year. Basic members pay $55. Either way, it’s the right place to start — the content helps you understand the whole system before you dive into specialty areas.
Report Writing
Good writing separates great shoppers from average ones. This course teaches clear language, proper grammar, and how to describe exactly what you saw. Companies want shoppers who turn in clean, specific reports the first time.
You’ll learn to fix the common errors that slow down editors. Strong writers get more jobs because their reports save time and money. I’ve seen firsthand how much a well-written report matters — schedulers notice, and they remember.
Ethics and Rules
Mystery shopping affects real people’s careers. This course covers the rules every shopper must know. Topics include working as an independent contractor, privacy responsibilities, industry guidelines, and professional conduct on every shop.
Knowing these rules protects both you and the employees you evaluate. It’s not the most exciting course, but it’s foundational stuff you’ll use on every single assignment.
Plus members can buy the Core Bundle (Ethics + Report Writing) for $30. That’s a $30 savings versus buying each course separately. Basic members pay $95 for the bundle versus $110 if purchased individually.
Specialty Courses
After completing the three core courses, you unlock field-specific options. Specialty certifications prepare you for higher-paying assignments that require specific knowledge.
What’s Available
MSPA offers courses across a wide range of industries. Banking teaches bank mystery shopping requirements. Auto I and Auto II cover car dealership sales and service visits. Hotel and Resort I covers lodging property evaluations. Property I teaches apartment leasing shops.
Retail I, II, and III build skills in stages — you must complete them in order. QSR covers quick-service and fast food locations. Fine Dining teaches upscale restaurant evaluations. Casinos covers gaming venues. Airports I covers airport concessions and retail. Luxury teaches high-end brand evaluations. Phone and Online covers remote, non-visit shops. Brand Auditing teaches open-identity compliance checks.
Most specialty courses cost $15 for Plus members or $55 for Basic members. Series courses must be completed in order — you can’t skip Retail I to get to Retail II.
Video Shopping Courses
Video mystery shopping typically pays more than standard shops. MSPA offers two video certification levels, each with unique requirements.
Video I covers the fundamentals of covert video recording. You’ll learn equipment basics, camera placement, legal requirements by state, and what clients look for in video shop reports. It costs $55 for Plus members or $100 for Basic members. Unlike most courses, Video I doesn’t require the three core courses first — so you can take it early if video shopping interests you.
Video II is hands-on and requires live feedback. Students practice with actual equipment and submit sample video shops for review. This course only runs in person at ShopperFest because the hands-on nature doesn’t translate to online learning.
Gold Course
Gold demonstrates advanced mastery of mystery shopping fundamentals. MSPA updated this course in 2025. Earning Gold signals to companies that you’ve made a serious investment in your craft — it’s the closest thing mystery shopping has to an advanced professional credential.
Gold costs $55 for Plus members or $120 for Basic members. Like Video I, Gold doesn’t require core courses first. But completing the core courses first makes the advanced Gold content much easier to absorb.
Step by Step: Getting Certified
Ready to start? Here’s the exact path from creating your account to earning your first MSPA credentials.
Go to mspa-americas.org and click “Join MSPA Americas.” Select Field Talent as your member type. Then choose Basic (free) or Plus ($49/year). If you plan to take more than one course, Plus is almost always the smarter move financially.
Sign into your new MSPA account and navigate to the course section. Review what’s available and confirm the prices for your membership level before adding anything to your cart.
Start with Intro to Mystery Shopping (free for Plus members). Then add Report Writing and Ethics to complete the core requirements. Consider the Core Bundle to save on the latter two. Don’t skip ahead to specialty courses — you need the cores to unlock them.
Work through each course carefully. Use a desktop or laptop — MSPA says phones and tablets may not work correctly with their course platform. Take notes on key points. The content isn’t just for passing tests; it genuinely makes you a better shopper.
Each course ends with a test. You need an 80% or higher to pass. You get up to three attempts within one year of purchase. If you fail, you must wait at least 30 days before trying again. Use that time to review the material — don’t just click through faster.
Your credentials should appear within 48 hours of passing (weekends not included). Log in to confirm they display correctly on your profile. One note for new shoppers: MSPA eliminated certification codes back in 2020. Before then, shoppers received a code to paste manually into each mystery shopping company’s platform. That system is gone — companies now verify your credentials by searching the MSPA database directly. If you see old job application forms asking for a code, just leave that field blank.
With your core courses done, your specialty catalog opens up. Pick courses that match the types of assignments you want. Banking and auto specialty credentials often lead to better-paying work — those shops require specific knowledge that clients pay a premium for.
Keeping Your Status Active
MSPA certification isn’t a one-time achievement. It requires some basic upkeep to stay visible to companies.
Stay an Active Member
Your credentials only appear in company searches while you’re an active MSPA member. You also need to log in at least once every 12 months to stay in active status.
If you skip logging in for a full year, the system flags you as inactive. Your profile disappears from company searches even though your account still technically exists. The fix is simple — just log in — but you have to catch it before it happens.
Finish Courses on Time
You have one year from the date of purchase to complete a course and pass its test. After 12 months, unfinished courses expire. If that happens, you have to buy the course again and start over.
Set a reminder when you buy a course. Life gets busy, and losing a $15 or $55 course to an expiration date is frustrating. Plan your study time before you buy, not after.
Renew Your Membership
Plus membership renews annually. You’ll get a billing notice near your signup anniversary. Keeping your membership current keeps your credentials visible and your profile active in company searches.
If you let your membership lapse, your profile drops out of searches and your credentials disappear. Rejoining later means starting fresh — you’d need to retake and repurchase your courses.
MSPA does not issue refunds for memberships or courses under any circumstances. Think through your decision before purchasing. If you’re unsure whether mystery shopping is right for you, complete 15–25 shops first before investing in certification. Check our guide on how to become a mystery shopper to get started with no upfront costs.
How Companies Use Your Credentials
Understanding how companies view MSPA certification helps you decide which courses actually move the needle for your shopping career.
The Searchable Database
Member companies can search the MSPA shopper database and filter by specific credentials. A company that needs bank mystery shoppers, for example, can pull a list of shoppers with the Banking course completed. Your credentials make you findable for those targeted searches.
When companies launch specialty programs or need shoppers for higher-stakes assignments, they often start with the MSPA database. Certified shoppers get the first look. That’s the real value of credentials — visibility to companies you might never find on your own.
How Verification Works Today
Before 2020, MSPA issued certification codes that shoppers had to manually enter into every company’s application form. Keeping dozens of profiles updated was tedious and error-prone.
MSPA replaced that system with direct database verification. Companies now check your credentials by searching your MSPA profile directly — no codes, no manual updates. If your membership is active and you’ve logged in within the past 12 months, your credentials show up automatically. Some older company application forms still have a code field left over from the old system. Just leave it blank.
Companies Differ on How Much They Value It
Every mystery shopping company weighs credentials differently. Some companies actively seek out certified shoppers and give them priority access to the best assignments. Others focus almost entirely on shop history and ratings.
Certification is one factor among many. A shopper with 200 strong shops and no credentials will often get more work than a newly certified shopper with a thin track record. Think of MSPA credentials as a way to get in the door — your performance once you’re inside is what keeps the assignments coming.
Is Certification Right for You?
MSPA certification makes sense for some shoppers and not for others. Your goals and shopping habits are the deciding factors.
Get Certified If You:
- Plan to shop for a year or more
- Want access to specialty shops that pay more
- Have interest in banking, auto, or video work
- Want to signal commitment to companies
- Are interested in attending ShopperFest
- Want to understand the industry more deeply
Skip Certification If You:
- Are just testing mystery shopping out
- Only plan occasional, casual shops
- Already have strong company relationships
- Focus mainly on basic retail or restaurant work
- Haven’t done enough shops to know your preferences
- Prefer to put your money elsewhere for now
Brand New Shoppers
Should you get certified right away? Usually not. Spend your first few months trying different companies and shop types. Mystery shopping has to fit your life — the schedule, the driving, the report writing — before it makes sense to invest in credentials.
Most shoppers find that 15–25 shops is enough to know whether they’re in it for the long haul. At that point, you also know which types of shops you enjoy most, which makes your course choices much smarter. See our guide on how much money you can make mystery shopping for a realistic look at income potential before committing.
Veteran Shoppers
What about experienced shoppers who’ve never certified? It depends on your situation. If you already have a full pipeline of work through long-standing company relationships, credentials add less value to your day-to-day.
But veterans who want to break into new fields — especially banking, auto, or video — often find that credentials open doors that experience alone can’t. The courses also teach things that even longtime shoppers sometimes miss, particularly around report writing standards and industry rules.
One thing worth knowing: MSPA gives no credit for prior experience. Whether you’ve completed 50 shops or 5,000, you take the same courses and tests as everyone else. Some veteran shoppers find that frustrating. But the upside is that everyone in the database meets the same baseline standard — and companies know that.
Breaking Down the Costs
Clear numbers make this decision much easier. Here’s exactly what to expect at each membership level.
Plus Membership Math
Plus costs $49 per year. Your first year includes a free Intro course ($55 value). All other standard courses drop to $15 each instead of $55.
If you take just the three core courses as a Plus member, your total comes to $79: $49 membership + free Intro + $15 Writing + $15 Ethics. As a Basic member, those same three courses cost $165 ($55 each). Plus saves you $86 on the core courses alone — more than covering the annual membership fee.
Bundle Options
Bundles cut costs even further for shoppers who know which direction they’re heading. The Core Bundle (Ethics + Report Writing) runs $30 for Plus or $95 for Basic. The Business Bundle (Banking + Brand Auditing) is $30 for Plus or $95 for Basic. The Auto Bundle (Auto I + Auto II) is $30 for Plus or $95 for Basic. The Retail Bundle (Retail I, II, and III) is $45 for Plus or $145 for Basic.
Sample Total Costs
| Course Path | Plus Cost | Basic Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Core Courses Only | $79 | $165 |
| Core + Gold | $134 | $285 |
| Core + Banking + Auto Bundle | $139 | $355 |
| Core + Video I | $134 | $265 |
| Core + Retail Bundle + QSR | $139 | $365 |
Going to ShopperFest
MSPA hosts ShopperFest every summer. It’s the only place to take Video II, and it offers in-person learning that online courses simply can’t replicate.
In-Person Perks
Many courses have live review sessions and tests at ShopperFest. You can study ahead, attend a review before the exam, and earn recognition on-site when you pass. Shoppers who complete courses at the event receive real paper certificates — a nice touch for those who want something tangible to show for their work.
Video II is ShopperFest-only due to its hands-on nature. Students work with actual equipment, practice covert recording, and receive direct feedback on their footage from experienced evaluators.
Event Details
ShopperFest runs from Friday afternoon through Sunday afternoon each June. Registration fees start around $275, with discounts for Plus members and early birds. The 2026 event takes place in Las Vegas, June 26–28.
Your registration covers all sessions, Friday dinner, Saturday and Sunday lunches, and evening social events. Plus members receive one complimentary course at the event.
Beyond the courses, the networking value is real. Meeting schedulers and other shoppers face to face builds relationships that translate into more assignments back home.
Common Questions
Is MSPA certification required for mystery shopping?
No. The vast majority of mystery shopping companies don’t require MSPA certification for standard retail, restaurant, or general assignments. Where it matters most is in specialty categories — banking, video, auto — where companies often prefer or require credentials before assigning you to sensitive or higher-paying shops.
What happens if I cancel my MSPA membership?
Canceling removes your profile from company searches. Your credentials get dropped and they don’t transfer if you rejoin later. If you come back, you start fresh — new membership tier, new course purchases, and retaking whatever you need. There’s no account “pause” option.
Can I take MSPA courses on my phone?
MSPA recommends using a desktop or laptop computer. Their course platform may not function correctly on phones or tablets. Don’t risk failing a test because of a mobile display issue — sit down at a full computer for your coursework.
How do companies verify that I’m certified?
You don’t need to do anything. Companies log into the MSPA database and search your profile directly. As long as your membership is active and you’ve logged in within the past 12 months, your credentials show up automatically. No codes, no manual updates needed.
What if I fail a test?
You get up to three attempts within one year of purchasing the course. You must wait at least 30 days between failed attempts. Use that time to go back through the material — the 30-day wait is a good forcing function to actually study rather than just clicking through faster.
Do MSPA credentials expire?
Individual credentials don’t have their own expiration date. But they require an active MSPA membership to remain visible. Keep your membership current and log in at least once per year to maintain your credentials in the database.
Getting the Most Value
MSPA certification delivers real value when you approach it with a plan. A few simple habits make a big difference.
Start with Plus
Unless you’re still testing whether mystery shopping fits your life, Plus is the smarter financial choice. The course discounts alone justify the $49 annual fee the moment you take more than one course. Most shoppers who commit to certification take at least three to five courses over time.
Do Core Courses First
Don’t jump straight to specialty courses. Core courses teach the fundamentals that improve all your shopping, not just the shops tied to that certification. The report writing course in particular changes how you approach every assignment — editors notice the difference, and better reports mean more future work.
Pick Courses That Match Where You Want to Work
Banking credentials matter little if you prefer retail assignments. Auto credentials don’t help you if you hate car dealership shops. Choose based on the types of work you actually enjoy doing and the companies you most want to work with. Our guide to the best mystery shopping companies breaks down which companies specialize in which shop types — a useful reference before picking your courses.
Stay Logged In
Make it a habit to log into your MSPA account at least a few times per year, even during slow periods. This keeps your profile active, your credentials visible, and ensures you don’t accidentally drop off company radar.
Think About ShopperFest
If you’re serious about mystery shopping as a long-term side income, ShopperFest is worth a look. The networking, in-person learning, and direct access to company schedulers can accelerate your career in ways that online courses alone can’t replicate.
