MSPA certification helps mystery shoppers stand out. But the process has many courses, choices, and rules to follow. This guide walks you through it all, from sign up to renewal.
New to mystery shopping or thinking about getting certified after years of work? This guide covers the full MSPA certification process. You’ll learn what’s needed, what it costs, and if it’s right for you.
What Is MSPA Certification?
MSPA Americas is the main trade group for mystery shopping. They offer courses that teach best practices. Companies look for these credentials when picking shoppers for jobs.
Think of MSPA certification as a badge for mystery shoppers. It tells companies you’ve learned the trade and passed tests. Your credentials show up on your MSPA profile where companies can find you.
The program covers many areas. Core courses teach skills every shopper needs. Specialty courses focus on fields like banking, cars, or fine dining. Advanced courses like Gold show deeper commitment.
Key Point: You must join MSPA first. You can’t buy courses without being a Basic (free) or Plus (paid) member.
Picking Your Membership Level
Before you pursue MSPA certification, know your options. MSPA Americas has two levels with different perks and prices.
Basic Membership (Free)
Basic costs nothing but has limits. You get access to the Job Board where companies post open shops. You also join the MSPA database where companies can find you. Basic members buy courses at full price.
But Basic has downsides. You only get one free membership ever. If you cancel, you must rejoin as a Plus member. You also miss big discounts on courses.
Plus Membership ($49-60/year)
Plus unlocks the full MSPA perks. It costs $49 paid upfront or $60 spread monthly ($5/month for 12 months).
Plus members get great deals. The Intro course comes free your first year. That alone is worth $55. All other courses cost just $15 instead of $55.
Extra Plus perks include full database listing, member deals on fun and travel, Plus-only webinars, and ShopperFest discounts.
| Feature | Basic (Free) | Plus ($49/year) |
|---|---|---|
| Job Board Access | Yes | Yes |
| Database Listing | Limited | Full with credentials |
| Intro Course | $55 | Free (first year) |
| Other Courses | $55 each | $15 each |
| Gold Course | $120 | $55 |
| Video I Course | $100 | $55 |
| Member Deals | No | Yes |
| ShopperFest Discount | No | Yes |
The Three Core Courses
MSPA needs you to take three core courses first. These teach key skills every shopper must have. You must finish all three before you can take most other courses.
Intro to Mystery Shopping
This course gives an overview of the whole field. You learn basic skills and what companies expect. It covers what mystery shopping really means and how to do jobs right.
Once called Silver, this course builds the base for all other learning. Plus members get it free their first year. Basic members pay $55.
Report Writing
Good writing sets great shoppers apart from the rest. This course teaches clear words, good grammar, and how to describe what you see. Companies want shoppers who turn in clean reports.
You learn to fix common errors that slow down editors. You learn to paint clear pictures of your visits. Strong writers get more jobs because their reports save time and money.
Ethics and Rules
Mystery shopping affects real people’s jobs and lives. This course covers the rules every shopper must know. You learn about working as a contractor and acting like a pro.
Topics include business setup, industry rules, privacy duties, and right conduct. Knowing these rules protects both you and the workers you check on.
Bundle Deal: Plus members can buy the Core Bundle (Ethics + Writing) for $30. Basic members pay $95 for the bundle versus $110 if bought alone.
Specialty Courses
After core courses, you unlock field-specific options. These prep you for special jobs that often pay more.
What’s On Offer
MSPA has courses across many fields. Banking covers bank mystery shops. Auto I & II teach car sales and service checks.
Hotel and Resort I covers stays at lodging spots. Property I teaches apartment shops. Retail I, II, and III build retail skills step by step.
QSR covers fast food spots. Fine Dining teaches upscale meal checks. Casinos covers gaming spots.
Airports I covers airport food and shops. Luxury teaches high-end checks. Phone & Online covers remote jobs. Brand Auditing teaches open inspections.
Most courses cost $15 for Plus or $55 for Basic. Courses in a series (like Retail I, II, III) must be done in order.
Video Shopping Courses
Video mystery shopping pays well. MSPA has two video course levels with unique needs.
Video I covers hidden video basics. You learn gear use, camera spots, legal rules, and what clients want. It costs $55 for Plus or $100 for Basic. Unlike most courses, Video I doesn’t need core courses first.
Video II gives hands-on practice with gear. You must turn in sample video shops for review. This course only happens in person at ShopperFest because you need live feedback.
Gold Course
Gold shows advanced mastery of mystery shopping basics. MSPA updated this course in 2025. Earning Gold tells companies you’ve put in real effort to grow.
Gold costs $55 for Plus or $120 for Basic. Like Video I, Gold doesn’t need core courses first. But doing cores first helps you grasp the advanced content.
Step by Step: Getting Certified
Ready to start? Follow these steps from signup through your first MSPA certification.
1Join MSPA Americas
Go to mspa-americas.org and click “Join MSPA Americas.” Pick Field Talent. Choose Basic (free) or Plus ($49/year). Plus makes sense if you plan to take many courses.
2Log Into Your Account
Sign into your new MSPA account. Find the course section. Look at what’s offered and check prices for your level.
3Buy Your First Course
Start with Intro to Mystery Shopping (free for Plus). Add Report Writing and Ethics to finish core needs. Think about the Core Bundle to save money.
4Study the Content
Go through each course well. Use a PC or Mac since phones may not work. Take notes on key points. The content helps you shop better, not just pass tests.
5Pass the Tests
Each course ends with a test. You need 80% or higher to pass. You get up to three tries within one year. Wait 30 days between failed tries.
6Check Your Profile
Your credentials show up within 48 hours (not counting weekends). Log in to make sure they display right. MSPA stopped using codes in 2020.
7Add Specialty Courses
With cores done, unlock specialty options. Pick courses that match the fields you want. Banking and auto courses often lead to better-paying work.
Keeping Your Status Active
MSPA certification needs upkeep to stay active. Know these rules so you don’t lose what you’ve earned.
Stay an Active Member
Your credentials only show up while you’re an active MSPA member. You must log in at least once every 12 months to stay active.
If you don’t log in for 12 months, the system thinks you’ve left. Your profile stops showing up in searches even though your account still exists.
Finish Courses on Time
You have one year from purchase to finish each course and pass its test. After one year, undone courses expire. You must buy them again to continue.
This rule pushes you to finish rather than buy courses and never take them. Plan your timeline based on how much time you have to study.
Renew Your Membership
Plus membership needs yearly renewal. You get a bill near your signup date. Paying keeps your membership and credentials visible.
If you don’t renew, your profile leaves company searches. Your credentials get dropped. Rejoining later means buying and retaking courses.
Warning: There are no refunds for memberships or courses. MSPA enforces this rule with no exceptions. Think hard before you buy.
How Companies Use Your Credentials
Knowing how companies view MSPA certification helps you decide which courses matter most.
The Searchable Database
MSPA member companies can search for shoppers with certain credentials. For example, a company that needs bank shoppers can filter for those with the Banking course done.
Your credentials make you visible in targeted searches. When companies need shoppers for special projects, they often search the database first. Certified shoppers get called first.
No More Codes
Before 2020, MSPA gave out codes that shoppers typed into each company’s profile. This meant updating dozens of accounts by hand.
The new system got rid of codes. Companies search the MSPA database to verify credentials. Some old company forms still ask for codes. Just leave those fields blank since the old system is gone.
Companies Differ
Each company values credentials in its own way. Some seek out certified shoppers and give them first pick of jobs. Others focus mainly on past work and don’t care much about credentials.
Being certified doesn’t mean more work for sure. A shopper with great past work but no credentials often beats a certified shopper with so-so ratings. Think of certification as one factor among many.
Is Certification Right for You?
MSPA certification fits some shoppers but not all. Your goals and commitment level decide if it pays off.
Get Certified If You:
- Plan to shop for years to come
- Want access to higher-paying shops
- Seek banking, auto, or video jobs
- Value growth and industry knowledge
- Want to show commitment to companies
- Plan to attend ShopperFest events
Skip Certification If You:
- Just trying mystery shopping for fun
- Only plan to shop now and then
- Already have strong ties with companies
- Focus on basic retail or food shops
- Prefer to spend money elsewhere
- Haven’t done enough shops yet to know
Brand New Shoppers
Should new shoppers get certified right away? Usually, no. Spend your first few months trying different companies and job types. Learn if mystery shopping fits your life.
MSPA certification makes more sense after 15-25 shops. By then you know which fields interest you and can pick courses wisely.
Veteran Shoppers
What about shoppers with years of work but no credentials? It depends on your setup. If you already get plenty of jobs from long-time contacts, certification adds less value.
But veterans who want to branch into new fields gain from the right courses. Banking and video credentials open doors that experience alone might not. The courses also teach things even longtime shoppers may have missed.
MSPA gives no credit for life experience. Whether you’ve done 50 shops or 5,000, you take the same courses and tests as everyone. Some veterans find this annoying, but the rule makes sure everyone knows MSPA’s set content.
Breaking Down the Costs
Knowing the true costs helps you make smart choices about your spending.
Plus Membership Math
Plus costs $49 per year. Your first year includes a free Intro course ($55 value). Other courses cost $15 each instead of $55.
If you just take the three core courses as a Plus member, your total is $79 ($49 membership + free intro + $15 writing + $15 ethics). As Basic, those same courses cost $165 ($55 each).
Plus pays for itself if you take more than two courses. Most serious shoppers take many courses, making Plus the clear winner.
Bundle Options
MSPA offers bundles that cut costs more. The Core Bundle gives you Ethics plus Writing for $30 (Plus) or $95 (Basic). The Business Bundle has Banking plus Brand Auditing for $30 (Plus) or $95 (Basic).
The Auto Bundle covers Auto I plus II for $30 (Plus) or $95 (Basic). The Retail Bundle has Retail I, II, and III for $45 (Plus) or $145 (Basic).
Sample Total Costs
| Course Path | Plus Cost | Basic Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Core Courses Only | $79 | $165 |
| Core + Gold | $134 | $285 |
| Core + Banking + Auto Bundle | $139 | $355 |
| Core + Video I | $134 | $265 |
| Core + Retail Bundle + QSR | $139 | $365 |
Going to ShopperFest
MSPA hosts ShopperFest each summer. It offers unique course options you can’t get online.
In-Person Perks
Some courses have review sessions and tests at ShopperFest. You can study ahead, then attend live reviews before taking tests on site. Those who pass get recognized at the event plus real paper certificates.
Video II only happens at ShopperFest due to its hands-on nature. Students practice with gear and get direct feedback on their recordings.
Event Details
ShopperFest runs Friday afternoon through Sunday afternoon in June. Sign up fees start around $275 with discounts for early birds and Plus members. The 2026 event takes place in Las Vegas June 26-28.
Your fee covers all sessions, Friday dinner, Saturday and Sunday lunches, and social events. Plus members get one free course at the event.
Common Questions
What If I Cancel My Membership?
Canceling removes your profile from searches. Your credentials get dropped and won’t transfer to a future membership. If you rejoin later, you start fresh with nothing.
Can I Take Courses on My Phone?
MSPA says use a PC or Mac. Phones and tablets may not work with the course platform.
Do Companies Require It?
Most don’t require credentials for normal jobs. But some special projects do. Certain video and high-end programs may need specific courses done.
How Do I Prove I’m Certified?
You don’t need to prove anything. Companies check the MSPA database to verify. As long as you’re active and have logged in within 12 months, your credentials show up.
What If I Fail a Test?
You can retake tests up to three times within one year. Wait at least 30 days between tries. Use that time to study more.
Do Credentials Expire?
Single credentials don’t expire on their own. But they need active MSPA membership to stay visible. Keep your membership and log in yearly to keep them active.
Getting the Most Value
MSPA certification gives top value when you approach it wisely. Keep these tips in mind.
Start with Plus
Unless you’re sure mystery shopping isn’t for you, Plus makes sense. The course discounts alone justify the yearly fee if you take more than one.
Do Core Courses First
Don’t jump straight to specialty courses. Core courses teach basic skills that help all your shopping. The writing course alone often transforms your reports and editor feedback.
Pick Courses Wisely
Choose MSPA certification that matches fields you want to work. Banking credentials matter little if you prefer retail jobs. Focus on courses that open doors you want to walk through.
Stay Active
Log into your MSPA account now and then even during slow times. This simple habit keeps your profile active and credentials visible.
Think About ShopperFest
The yearly event offers networking value beyond courses. Meeting company reps and fellow shoppers creates ties that lead to more jobs.
