Welcome Back
Welcome to the fifth edition of The Mystery Shopping Insider. This issue covers the second half of March 2026. We close the loop on stories from earlier this month, dig into a major new study on QSR service quality, and look at a shift in how gas station shops are being evaluated. There’s a lot here worth knowing.
We also have an industry market report with some big numbers, a cannabis compliance update, and a scam alert follow-up that every active shopper should read.
Lead Story: The QSR “Transactional Gap”
Fast Food Is Getting Faster — and More Impersonal
A major new study from Intouch Insight, released March 31, puts a name to something many shoppers have probably noticed: the “Transactional Gap.” Quick service restaurants are speeding up, but the human connection that keeps customers coming back is eroding.
The 2026 On-Premises Study covered 753 mystery shops across 10 leading QSR brands. Speed of service improved by a full minute compared to 2025. That sounds like good news. The problem is what got cut along the way.
Key Findings
27%+ of guests were not acknowledged upon entering. A smile was observed in only 64.3% of visits. The word “please” was used in just 29.9% of interactions — down from 2025.
The most telling finding: when guests perceived service as slow — regardless of actual time elapsed — overall satisfaction dropped sharply. The study suggests that a lack of human engagement makes the wait feel longer, even when it isn’t. Brands that automate heavily without investing in frontline warmth may be winning on speed metrics while losing on the experience that actually drives loyalty.
For shoppers, this study is a signal. QSR clients will keep leaning on human evaluators to measure exactly what AI can’t: whether the person at the counter made a guest feel seen. Expect more emphasis on greeting, eye contact, and courtesy language on your shop forms going forward.

Follow-Up: Closing the Loop on Early March Stories
The Tax Preparer Investigation: Congress Responds
We covered the Center for Taxpayer Rights’ mystery shopping investigation into non-credentialed tax preparers in Edition #4. The legislative fallout has been swift.
On March 16, Senate Finance Committee leaders introduced the bipartisan Taxpayer Assistance and Service Act (TAS Act). The bill directly targets the fraud and incompetence that mystery shoppers uncovered. It requires unlicensed preparers to complete rigorous training and certification, stiffens financial penalties for bad actors, and criminalizes the use of fraudulent preparer tax identification numbers (PTINs).
Mystery shopping data influencing federal legislation. That’s impact worth noting — and a reminder that this work matters well beyond the shop form.
Blaze Pizza Upsell Numbers Confirmed
We reported on Blaze Pizza’s partnership with Reality Based Group (RBG) earlier this month. The pilot results are now public. Locations using RBG’s GameFilm video mystery shopping program delivered nearly a 50% increase in upsells. That’s a data point that will get attention across the QSR space.
For shoppers, QSR video programs like this one typically pay more and offer richer evaluation criteria. If you haven’t explored video mystery shopping yet, it’s worth a look.
MSPA Prague Workshop Recap
The MSPA Europe/Africa Operational Excellence Workshop in Prague on March 18 drew professionals from across the region. Sessions focused on KPIs, operational excellence, and where the industry is heading. The momentum heading into the May conference in Alicante is strong.
The early bird registration deadline for Alicante has been extended to April 10. If you’re considering attending, that’s your window.
Scam Watch
⚠ Follow-Up Alert: Confero Fake Check Scam
Following our Edition #4 scam alert, Confero has released additional details to help shoppers protect themselves. Scammers have been sending physical checks to shoppers with instructions to deposit and wire money back. Confero’s reminder is direct: they only pay mystery shoppers via PayPal.
If you receive a physical check claiming to be from Confero, it is a scam. Do not deposit it. Do not respond to any instructions that came with it.
Share this with newer shoppers in your network. The fake check scam is one of the most persistent in this industry because it looks legitimate at first glance. A real check from a real company name makes people hesitate — and that hesitation is exactly what scammers count on.

Industry News
Gas Stations: The Real Profit Is Inside
Reality Based Group published a report this month that reframes what gas station shops are actually measuring. In 2026, fuel margins are thin. The convenience store experience is where loyalty is built and revenue is won or lost.
The Business Case
A single gas station location losing just 8 inside purchases per day due to poor experience can cost over $35,000 annually in lost revenue. That makes restroom cleanliness, fresh food quality, and coffee consistency business-critical metrics — not afterthoughts.
Mystery evaluations at gas stations are shifting to reflect this. Shoppers are now being asked to assess the full inside experience, not just pump functionality and staff friendliness. More detailed shop forms often mean higher shop fees. If you’ve been passing on gas station shops, that calculus may be worth revisiting.
Market Force Named #1 Mystery Shopping Company
Market Force Information was named the #1 mystery shopping company by TopConsumerReviews.com on March 19, recognized for performance, reliability, and shopper experience.
Market Force is one of the first companies we recommend to new shoppers. This recognition validates that reputation. If you haven’t signed up yet, their profile is in our company directory.
Massachusetts Cannabis Secret Shopper Program Updated
On March 31, the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission announced that updated regulations for its Secret Shopper off-the-shelf testing program are now in effect. The program allows individuals to conduct random testing of cannabis products for consumer health and safety purposes.
The new rules expand access by allowing third-party vendors — including research institutions — to enter agreements with the Commission to serve as secret shoppers. They also clarify documentation and chain-of-custody processes for tested products.
Cannabis compliance shopping is an emerging niche worth watching as more states build regulatory frameworks. For shoppers open to new shop types, this could be an interesting avenue to explore.
Shopper Tip of the Edition
Tip: Gas Station Shops Are Getting More Detailed
If your gas station shop form now includes questions about the coffee station, fresh food case, and restroom cleanliness, that’s not a coincidence. Clients are responding to the data in the RBG report — the inside experience is the priority now.
Take a few extra minutes on your next gas station assignment to observe the convenience store thoroughly. Document what you see with the same detail you’d bring to a restaurant or retail shop. That level of care shows up in your scores and your reputation with schedulers.

The conversation around AI and human evaluators will keep evolving. The Intouch Insight study this month is a strong argument for the human side — but we’ll keep tracking how different sectors are blending both approaches and what that means for shopper earning potential.
We’ll also be watching for announcements from the MSPA EA Conference in May and any new platform news heading into the summer season.
Stay tuned.
